The Masters in Library and Information Science degree program is broken up into four separate 10 week quarters per year allowing students to take more courses in a shorter amount of time. One semester credit equals to 1.5 quarter credits. Traditional universities use the two semester system. The library and information science program gives students a solid introduction to the field with coursework that advances in a logical progression and the availability of a wide variety of electives. Students are required to complete six core courses that will total 18 credits. To complete the Masters in Library and Information Science program, students must complete a total of 45 credits. To make up the difference students can take any available subject electives with the INFO prefix to complete the required number of credits for the program. Upon picking their (optional) concentration, students will complete five courses—3 to 4 of which are required and 1 to 2 of which will be chosen from a preselected list of courses that are relevant to this area. The remaining 12 credits are free electives. And some outstanding cases students with previous coursework coming from an ALA accredited program or other information science program can petition to be exempt from one to three of the required courses. The petition should be submitted at the time that the application is, and needs to include all appropriate paperwork. The concentration for Management of Digital Information, now called Digital Curation, is made up of 3 required courses, one technology course, and one Content course.
