Google can render JavaScript, but not instantly, not always, and not without cost. If your pages depend on JavaScript to deliver content, you need to know exactly what Googlebot sees, when it sees it, and what happens when a script fails. In the early days of search, rendering a page was simple. Google fetched the HTML, extracted the text, and indexed what it found. Modern websites don’t work that way. A React app, a Vue storefront, or a headless commerce frontend sends the browser a near-empty HTML shell and builds the page using JavaScript. Users get a fast, interactive experience. Search engines get a shell with no content unless they execute the JavaScript first.

Google has gotten much better at executing JavaScript since this article first ran. Googlebot has used an “evergreen” Chromium rendering engine since May 2019, which means it runs the same engine as current Chrome. The old warnings about Google being unable to read JavaScript are outdated. In 2026, Google removed the remaining cautionary language from its own JavaScript SEO documentation.

But “Google can render JavaScript” isn’t the same as “JavaScript has no SEO cost.” Rendering takes time and compute. Pages queue up, scripts fail, content waits. How Google Renders JavaScript in 2026

Hydration and Hybrid Rendering

The URL Inspection tool replaced the old “Fetch as Google” when the new Search Console rolled out in 2018. Rich Results Test
